Learn to express wishes, polite requests and simple imaginary situations with would and would like.
Main objective: say what you would like, would not like, or would do in an imagined situation.

01 Grammar – Would / Would like
Objective: express a polite wish, a preference, or the result of a simple imaginary situation.
1. Would like + noun
Subject + would like + noun
I would like a coffee, please.
She would like a new job.
Would like is more polite than want.
2. Would like + to + verb
Subject + would like + to + base verb
I would like to visit London.
They would like to travel more.
After would like, use to + infinitive.
3. Would + base verb
Subject + would + base verb
I would travel if I had enough money.
She would help you, but she is busy.
Use it for an imaginary or hypothetical result.
4. Affirmative forms
I / you / he / she / we / they would play
Contraction: would → ’d
I’d stay near the beach.
We’d choose Green Valley.
5. Negative forms
Subject + would not + base verb
Contraction: would not → wouldn’t
I wouldn’t buy that car.
She wouldn’t go alone.
6. Questions and short answers
Would + subject + base verb…?
Would you travel to Japan?
Yes, I would. / No, I wouldn’t.
What would you like to do?
7. Simple hypothetical pattern
If + past simple, … would + base verb
If I had time, I would study more.
If she lived near the sea, she would swim every day.
Important: do not normally use would directly after if.
8. Common differences
I like coffee. = general preference.
I would like a coffee. = polite request now.
I want a coffee. = direct; less polite.
9. Frequent mistakes
❌ I would to go. → ✅ I would go.
❌ I would like go. → ✅ I would like to go.
❌ If I would have money… → ✅ If I had money…

05 Listening – “If I Were a Boy”
Context: the singer imagines how she would behave and understand relationships if she were a boy. The song repeatedly uses an imaginary if-clause and would.
Task: listen, complete the missing conditional forms, then translate every line into French.
